We
are all on this planet together - what happens in one part of the world
does make a difference in another. The Rábia Balkhi Hospital Project
[www.kabulmaternity.org] endeavors
to turn that reality into a stronger truth. It was started in July, 2003,
to improve conditions at Rábia Balkhi Hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan.
In spite of very limited resources up to 50 babies a day are delivered
in this hospital - itself a survivor of Kabul's two decades of war. The
project was based on two points a) to find out from the doctors at the
hospital what they most needed in order to improve quality of care and
make that the priority and b) all money raised would go directly
towards this effort. It is hoped that, with the completion of its initial
goals, the Rábia Balkhi Hospital Project will grow to provide help
to other maternity hospitals and clinics in Afghanistan and in other countries
as well.
The quickening of the spirit that comes with word that a woman has delivered
a healthy baby is a universal experience. The right to a safe birth, for
both mother and child, is the hope of the Rábia Balkhi Hospital
Project. |
